Zoo Rostock

Rostock Zoo

The Rostock Zoo is the largest zoo on the Baltic Sea coast and one of the most beautiful zoos in northern Germany. It was founded in 1899 as a wildlife park in a section of the Barnstorfer Forest and has been repeatedly expanded and developed ever since. Today, approximately 4,500 animals representing 320 different species enjoy plenty of space at the Rostock Zoo.

The beautiful park grounds, designed with great attention to detail and featuring a very old collection of plants, are a wonderful place to relax. All the animal exhibits and houses are connected by an extensive network of paths, and playgrounds and various snack stands invite visitors to linger even away from the animal exhibits. The Darwineum takes visitors on a journey through time, exploring the evolution of life on our planet.

Here, visitors can trace the origins of the animal and plant kingdoms and experience the history and evolution of our ancestors firsthand. The highlights of a visit to the zoo are, of course, the daily animal feedings. Between 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., you can learn a lot about the animals—things that would otherwise remain hidden during a regular visit—which is very exciting!
