Rent a Classic Car — Our Ikarus 55 Heritage Bus

They say it’s one of the last of its kind on the roads—at least in this condition. It has been lovingly and meticulously restored using all original parts and is likely the only one in Germany with a TÜV certification for use as a tour bus.

Our Ikarus 55 tour bus has already had an eventful life, as it is one of the first of its kind in a long line of buses of this type.

It was built between 1959 and 1960 in Budapest, Hungary. It made its first trips for the former VEB Kraftverkehr Eisenhüttenstatt. That’s likely where it was fitted with the Schönebeck engine, which still runs reliably today.

After being taken out of service, it was sold to the LPG (fruit-growing cooperative) Staupitz in the Spreewald. There, it was used to transport LPG members and for their trips.

During the period of German reunification, it underwent another change of ownership and found a new home with the “Association of East German Bus Drivers—Ikarus.” Unfortunately, the plan to restore the bus fell through.

Finally, the Ikarus 55 tour bus was acquired by Küstenbus GmbH and underwent a thorough restoration. The engine, chassis, and body were completely overhauled. The interior was also lovingly restored to its original condition.
