Freilichtmuseum Groß Raden

Groß Raden Open-Air Museum

1,000 years ago in Mecklenburg: Set in a beautiful location on a peninsula in Lake Sternberg, the Groß Raden Open-Air Museum transports you to the world of the Warnow Slavic tribe in the 9th and 10th centuries.

Based on excavations conducted in the 1970s, this reconstruction of a Slavic settlement—featuring a fortified hill, a place of worship, and wattle-and-daub and log huts—offers a glimpse into the culture of the Slavic tribes in Mecklenburg more than 1,000 years ago. Experience life in this settlement with its temple, fortified enclosure, huts, smithy, and kilns, all surrounded by defensive structures.

All replicas were built true to the originals using ancient techniques, tools, and materials—just as the Slavs would have used them back then. At many events, you can experience ancient working methods and techniques for yourself, such as pottery, baking in old ovens, grinding grain, cooking, or spinning and weaving.
