Schloss Güstrow

Güstrow Castle

Güstrow Castle is considered one of the most beautiful and significant Renaissance castles in Northern Europe. It was built in the second half of the 16th century as the stately residence of the local ruler, Duke Ulrich of Mecklenburg, as an imposing multi-winged complex, although the south wing remained unfinished.

Over several construction phases, Italian, French, and Central European architectural styles were combined. Güstrow Castle has been used as a museum since the 1970s. The vaulted cellars house one of the most significant medieval collections in Northern Germany, featuring the dukes’ hunting and ceremonial weapons, as well as art and crafts.

The banquet and reception rooms on the upper floors, restored with meticulous attention to detail, feature magnificent stucco ceilings and ceiling paintings.
